Aggregates for Highways & Road Construction

Essential Materials for Sub-base, Base & Surface Layers

Aggregates are a fundamental component in highway and road construction, providing the strength, stability and drainage required to support heavy traffic and withstand long-term wear. At RedRox, we supply a full range of aggregates used in all layers of road infrastructure—from subgrade improvement to final surface finishes, with both quarried and recycled options available across England, Scotland and Wales.

Where Aggregates Are Used in Highways:

Subgrade Improvement

Used to improve the load-bearing capacity of weak soils before laying structural layers.

Often stabilised with lime, cement, or fly ash.

Sub-base Layer

Typically composed of MOT Type 1, Type 3, or recycled aggregates.

Acts as a load-distribution layer to reduce pressure on the subgrade.

Also improves drainage and frost resistance.

Base Layer

A thicker, stronger aggregate layer that provides structural support.

May be stabilised using cementitious (cement, slag, fly ash), bituminous (bitumen or tar), or synthetic additives (resins, fibers, geosynthetics).

Surface Layer

Aggregates are used in asphalt and surface dressing, offering resistance to polishing and skidding.

Requires hard, durable aggregates like granite or basalt for long-lasting performance.

Types of Stabilised Aggregate Used:

Cementitious Blends

Combining cement, lime, or fly ash to increase load-bearing performance.

Bituminous Stabilisation

Incorporating bitumen or tar for flexible pavement layers.

Synthetic or Composite Additives

Including resins, fibers, and geosynthetics to enhance strength and durability.

Recycled Aggregates

Sustainable alternatives for base and sub-base construction, reducing environmental impact and project costs.

  • Distributes traffic loads evenly across layers to prevent rutting and deformation
  • Promotes drainage to prevent waterlogging and freeze-thaw damage
  • Improves durability and structural integrity of the pavement
  • Enhances skid resistance and surface grip when used in asphalt mixes
  • Reduces maintenance costs and extends pavement life

We supply:

  • MOT Type 1 & Type 3
