River Otter Realignment Scheme – Coastal Protection & Flood Resilience

Overview

The River Otter realignment project, located near Budleigh Salterton, involved major works where the river meets the sea. The existing sea defences had become increasingly difficult to maintain and were no longer providing adequate protection against coastal erosion and flooding. A full river diversion was therefore required to safeguard the surrounding landscape and communities.

Challenge

The project demanded a durable and compliant rock armour material capable of withstanding harsh coastal conditions while meeting the strict grading and performance standards set out in The Rock Manual (LMA 40/200 kg). Tight timelines, environmental constraints, and the need for continual compliance testing added to the complexity of the works.

Solution

Redrox Quarry Products supplied a high-specification Cornish Granite that met all Rock Manual LMA 40/200 kg requirements.
The order was confirmed on 24th March, with urgent production commencing immediately and deliveries starting just six days later on 30th March. Redrox maintained a steady supply of 200 tonnes per day, coordinating logistics, material testing, and compliance checks through UKAS-accredited laboratories.

Environmental responsibility was a key focus — Redrox even paused transport operations temporarily to ensure the protection of local wildlife, including the rare Ringed Plover species nesting nearby.

Outcome

Through a combination of rapid mobilisation, rigorous quality control, and environmental awareness, Redrox helped deliver a critical coastal resilience project that will protect the River Otter estuary for decades to come.
The scheme demonstrates Redrox’s ability to provide compliant, sustainable, and responsibly managed aggregate solutions for complex environmental and infrastructure challenges across the UK.
