Wombridge Embankment Landslip

Overview

In March, following prolonged periods of exceptionally heavy rainfall, a 50-metre section of the Wombridge embankment in Telford – located between Oakengates and Wellington stations – suffered a significant landslip. The incident caused major disruption to the rail network, affecting both passenger and freight services.

Challenge

Network Rail required an urgent response to stabilise the embankment and reopen the affected line ahead of the busy Easter travel period. Speed, reliability, and compliance with rail specification standards were critical to the success of the works.

Solution

Redrox Quarry Products were contacted to supply and deliver compliant embankment fill material at short notice.
Within hours, the Redrox team mobilised and successfully sourced, produced, and hauled over 18,000 tonnes of 6G gabion stone within a tight nine-day window. Working closely with Network Rail’s engineers and contractors, deliveries were coordinated around the clock to maintain progress and minimise downtime.

Outcome

The rail line was fully reinstated and reopened in time for the Easter period, restoring passenger and freight operations ahead of schedule.
Redrox’s rapid response and dependable supply chain played a key role in stabilising the embankment and ensuring the safety and continuity of this vital transport link.
